MERTON CLIVETTE • (1868-1931)

 BIOGRAPHY:

 Born: Portage, Wisconsin, USA, 1868;

 Named: Merton Clive Cook, changed his name to Clivette, 1868

 Died: New York, New York, USA 1931

1876-1886: Self taught (reading, writing, drawing) in mother's newspaper office. He later joined a traveling circus, worked as an acrobat and magician's helper. Met Frederick Remington. Sketched the crowds

1886-1906: Moved to San Francisco and briefly lived in Seattle. He worked for newspapers as a quick sketch artist. He married Catherine Parker Chamberlin. Merton started a vaudeville troop where he performed as a magician. He toured Europe and America on the Orpheum Circuit. He later met Rodin and other European artists

1906-1931: He moved to New York City, residing in Greenwich Village. Studied at the Art Students League with John La Farge, William Merritt Chase and John Henry Twachtman. He painted full-time and was the owner of the famed "Bazaar de Junk" located at Number One Sheridan Square.
